Standún is a unique family
run store, situated in a traditional Connemara setting opposite the Aran
Islands on the renowned Galway Bay coastline. Hand knitting is a craft
kept alive by the womenfolk of the Western seaboard. Each family had it’s
own traditional stitches, a precious unrecorded heritage. The meaning of
the stitches are closely related to the earth, the sea or the home life
of the fishermen.
West
of Ireland fishermen traditionally wore Aran sweaters when they went fishing
on the wild Atlantic. The natural oils in the Aran wool ensured that these
sweaters were both warm and water resistant. Each stich symbolises a different
aspect of the life of an Aran fisherman. The pattern of stitches was unique
to each family on the islands. Many of the hardworking fishermen lost their
lives at sea and the pattern of stitches served as a means of identification.
THE
CABLE the fisherman’s rope was for safety and good luck.
