In the 1730’s a Galway Goldsmith
named Joyce designed the original Claddagh Ring. The self contained community
of the Claddagh was established outside Galway City in the 18th century.
The ring – a heart supported on either side by a hand with a crown on top
– symbolises eternal love and friendship and has been used by the Claddagh
folk as a wedding ring for generations. Nowadays the Claddagh Ring will
sometimes be used as a wedding ring but more often worn as a dress ring.
